How To Make Your Own All-Natural Compost Heap
People have been coming up with some incredibly creative ways of using pallets these days, from benches to headboards, to planters, and in this article - a compost bin.
Because they are used for shipping inventory, companies use a massive number of them on a daily basis but the worst part is that they are usually thrown away. Now with this new fad of reusing them, they are no longer being added to the dump. You can call most companies and see if they have some they're willing to give you for free, or go ahead and drive around and you're bound to find some behind warehouses and other large retail stores. Because they're going to get rid of them anyways, most companies are happy to get them off their hands.
All you need to get started on this project is four equally sized pallets which you will assemble into a box shape with a bit of wire to hold things together. This compost bin will wear over time, and will need replacing in about 5 years or so but since it's so easy to make (and it's almost free) it will be simple to make another one when the time comes. The bin will measure about 3 or 4 sq. Feet when completed and you can even make a few of them to rotate the compost piles.
This tutorial will walk you through the few steps required to make this project, and you can have it complete in no time at all. There are a few different designs you can make but the concept is simple enough that you can tailor things to your needs. So if you're looking to make a compost bin, don't go buy one, use up the old wooden pallets hanging around and do a service to the environment and your wallet too!
