This Mama's German Chocolate Cake Recipe is rich and indulgent and best served with a glass of milk. The combination of this rich chocolate cake recipe with the coconut pecan buttercream frosting takes this cake to a whole new level. Some of the ingredients you will need for this cake recipe include sweet chocolate baking bars, all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, softened butter, sugar, and eggs. You will also need vanilla extract and buttermilk. For the coconut pecan frosting recipe, you will need chopped pecans, evaporated milk, sugar, butter, lightly beaten egg yolks, sweetened flaked coconut and vanilla extract.
To start the cake recipe, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Then lightly grease three 9-inch round cake pans, lining the bottoms of the pans with parchment paper, and lightly grease the paper. (9-inch). Then microwave the chocolate baking bars and some water in a large microwave-safe bowl on high for one to one and a half minutes or until the chocolate is melted and smooth, stirring once halfway through. Then combine the flour and the next two ingredients in a medium bowl. Then beat the butter and sugar at medium speed with an electric mixer until fluffy. Then add the egg yolks, one at a time, beating just until blended after each addition. Stir in the chocolate mixture and vanilla. Add the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk. Beat at low speed just until blended after each ingredient addition. Then beat the egg whites on high speed until stiff peaks form and gently fold into the batter. Pour the batter into the prepared pans. Then bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 25 to 30 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Then remove from oven, and gently run a knife around outer edge of cake layers to loosen from sides of pans. Cool in pans on wire racks for about 15 minutes. Then remove from the pans to wire racks and discard any parchment paper. Cool completely for about an hour. Then spread the coconut-pecan frosting between the cake layers and on top and sides of cake. Garnish, if desired.
